MANHASSET SCHOOLS, MANHASSET, NEW YORK
a. Project Description: After an intensive program and comprehensive facilities study of the entire school system, a $20,000,000 project was approved by the district to expand and upgrade. This included:
1) Ten new Elementary classrooms and two new library-media centers
b. Special Challenges: All three schools were renovated and added to while occupied. Due to the general lack of space this required detailed phasing and staging worked out carefully with the staff. The very different existing architecture of each school was carried over into the design of the new to provide consistency between the old and the new -- local historic preservationists were very pleased. A districtwide signage and graphics program brought color, orientation and identity to a previously drab institutional atmosphere to the delight of all concerned.
c. Meeting Educational Needs: At the secondary school the plan carried out a careful separation of the Middle School students and the High school students, avoiding cross traffic. Space was added for faculty work areas and conferencing. The administration of the Middle school and the High School were given separate identity and central locations for their academic groups. At the Elementary Schools, sufficient classrooms were added to accommodate growth and to adequately house required special educational programs, heretofore staffed into storage areas and basement. Adequately sized and up-to-date library-media centers were added.
d. Cost Benefit Studies: Ten different reorganization and space location approaches were analyzed in terms of their costs and educational advantages and disadvantages. All new building systems were reviewed for cost benefit and very economical expansion was achieved.
e. Project Facts:
1) District: Manhasset Union Free Schools
