WESTCHESTER COUNITY CENTER

The existing sixty year old art deco facility used by Westchester County for conventions, performances, exhibitions, sports events, circuses, and an active art school was in desperate need of repair and modernization. Rather than demolish the building, the conclusion was made to renovate and add to the facility to meet the current needs of the 500,000 annual county users.

The Main Hall was renovated with acoustical improvements, safety improvements, air conditioning, updated lighting and sound systems. New additions were constructed consisting of 42,000 square feet of meeting rooms, banquet kitchen, concessions, exhibition space and new art studios. The art deco style of the original building inspired the additions flanking the Main Hall.

All levels of the complex were made completely accessible to wheelchair users and persons with mobility impairments by providing a new entry ramp, elevator service and new handicapped toilet facilities.

The entire complex was brightened with directional graphics and accent colors inspired by historical research which uncovered original art deco style finishes which had been lost or painted over during the previous sixty years.
